Aboriginal communities embrace technology, but have unique cyber safety challenges

For many people living in remote Aboriginal communities, mobile devices are the sole means of accessing the internet.

However, when the use of mobile devices oversteps social and cultural lines, it can have serious consequences for individuals and their families.

While some people avoid social media and online financial transactions as a protective measure, this can result in new forms of digital exclusion.

Our research into online risks, carried out in central Australia and Cape York, reveals unique problems in remote communities, many of which are caused by the sharing of devices.

Even the most tech-averse will admit that they'd like to step, even if just briefly, into a shoe from the future. That's what Nike is promising with its self-lacing sneakers that have leapt from Hollywood screens into reality.

Nike put the dream of self-lacing shoes into the minds of sci-fi and sneaker fans when Michael J. Fox donned a fictional pair in 1989's Back to the Future Part II. By 2015, the year the movie is set, Nike had seemingly perfected the technology in real life, first announcing the Nike Air Mags, replicas of the sneakers Fox wears in the movie, and later the HyperAdapt — a self-lacing sneaker Nike intends to sell as an actual product. Amazon opens up Alexa's brain to developers

Amazon just added the artificial intelligence behind its Echo speakers to the list of services it offers to businesses.

The company introduced a new service Wednesday called Lex, which allows developers and businesses to tap into the AI smarts that power Alexa for their own bots.

Lex is currently in a preview phase, open to developers in Northern Virginia, but Amazon plans to expand its reach in the future.

The service allows developers to create conversational bots for Facebook Messenger (and soon Slack and Twilio) that are powered by the same speech recognition and natural language processing used for Alexa in Amazon's Echo devices. It also ties into other Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools so developers who are already using Amazon-hosted services can more easily create a bot experience.  Read more...

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has not only issued a formal apology on the social media platform for editing comments made about him on the site by Donald Trump supporters, but he's announced a big change to the site as well.

In a long post on r/announcements, Huffman begins by saying, "tl;dr: I fucked up. I ruined Thanksgiving. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again."

Perhaps the biggest news, though, is buried in Huffman's PS: There's now filtering available on the popular r/all. Huffman shared a video (below) on how users can filter out subreddits from their personal r/all page.  Read more...

It has only been three weeks since Donald Trump won the election, but in that time, harassment and hate-related incidents across the country have increased. To fight the outbreak of violence and intimidation, some organizations are turning to digital maps.

The wave of horrible acts prompted even Trump himself — when pressed by 60 Minutes reporter Leslie Stahl — to tell supporters allegedly perpetrating the crimes, "Don't do it, it's terrible." He added, "Stop it."

In a report published on Tuesday, the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization based in Alabama that has been tracking hate groups for 45 years, published an article that looked at the spike in hateful harassment and intimidation incidents across the U.S. in the first 10 days following the election, reporting nearly 900 in all. Your Google accounts could have been compromised if you own a Android phone, thanks to a new malware variant known as "Gooligan."

The malware has infected more than 1 million accounts, according to research released Wednesday from cyber security company Check Point, and that figure is growing by a massive 13,000 devices per day.

In August, Gooligan emerged as a complex malware that infects devices after users download apps from third party stores. It was originally related to a malicious app from 2015 named SnapPea.

The malware steals authentication tokens that can be used to access data from Google Play, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive and more. The malware installs certain apps on a user's phone and highly rates them. Its main mission is to install adware to generate revenue for those apps, reportedly raking in as much as $320,000 a month. It all started with a toaster. When Army Corporal Neftali Delgado awoke one day as a child only to find that the family toaster had stopped working, he decided to take it apart and see what was wrong.

Cpl. Delgado turned his passion and interest in fixing various devices into a career with the U.S. Army. As a Computer/Detections Systems Repairer in the U.S. Army, Cpl. Delgado performs maintenance and repair on a variety of critical systems and equipment, including night vision devices and equipment, plus some of the newer optic systems that are being rolled out.

Taking things apart and figuring out how to put them back together has been a lifelong joy for Cpl. Delgado — and it’s something he gets to do every day with the U.S. Army.     Read more...

This controller solves the Nintendo NES Classic's biggest problem

Getting your hands on an NES Classic — the coveted digital update of Nintendo's popular console from the '80s — is the challenge of this holiday season

But once you've finally called in a few favors and spent as much (or more) than you would on a PS4 or Xbox One, the NES Classic has one more agonizing hurdle for gamers to clear: how to manage its ridiculously short (two-foot!) controller cable.

Sure, if you're going for the full-on retro gaming experience, being tethered to the box is just part of the old-school charm. As we mentioned in our review of the Classic, there are cable extenders available to make it less painful. But we live in a post-cord world — and some aspects of nostalgia deserve to be left in the past.  Read more...

Netflix finally, finally lets you download movies and TV shows for offline viewing.

It's really catch-up for Netflix, to be honestAmazon Instant Video has had downloading and offline viewing for over a year now. Still, better late than never.

The only thing you'll need to do to start downloading videos for offline watching is update the Netflix app for iOS 8 or later or Android 4.4.2 or later.

I took the new feature for a spin on an iPhone 7 and Google Pixel XL to see if it's any good.

To start, downloading content is really easy. There's a new "Available for Download" section in the navigation menu. Click it and you'll be brought to a page of content. Read more...

The “smart home” is becoming a reality. We’re starting to see the launch and adoption of countless types of Wi-Fi-enabled devices that previously had no digital value or function. It’s only a matter of time before the entirety of our homes are stitched together through the same Internet connection, making the bandwidth and coverage of your Wi-Fi more important than it’s ever been.

The term “smart home” is somewhat vague, and open to multiple interpretations, as there is no single industry standard for how smart home technology is developed or how it’s defined. Instead, colloquially, a smart home is a home with at least a handful of Wi-Fi enabled devices that offer digital menus, advanced features, and other high-tech upgrades for otherwise common appliances and functions. So what types of appliances are currently enjoying these features?  Read more...

In yet another case of "giant tech company choking out startup," Facebook has reportedly blocked Prisma's super gnarly art filters from working with Facebook Live videos.

Facebook claims the Prisma app's use of its Live Video API doesn't comply with terms and conditions, according to TechCrunch. Facebook claims the API is only for publishing live video from non-mobile devices such as professional cameras and drones.

"Your app streams video from a mobile device camera, which can already be done through the Facebook app. The Live Video API is meant to let people publish live video content from other sources such as professional cameras, multi-camera setups, games or screencasts," Facebook told Prisma. Reddit's Trump trolls are freaking out—and they're right

Trump trolls on Reddit want the site's CEO to quit over his response to a bizarre sex scandal called #Pizzagate. Crazily enough, they might be right.

If you haven't heard, #Pizzagate is the hashtag used by trolls spreading the unhinged, bogus claim that Hillary Clinton was involved in a child sex ring running out of a Washington, D.C. pizza parlor. Several employees of that pizza parlor received death threats as a result.
