Travellers will be questioned by AI lie detectors at the EU border

TwitterFacebook

It's already nerve-wracking answering questions at the border, and some ports in the European Union are taking it to another, kinda worrying level.

They're installing an artificial intelligence-powered system called iBorderCtrl, which aims to speed up the processing of travellers, but also to determine if they're lying.

According to New Scientist, a six-month trial will take place at four border crossing points in Hungary, Greece and Latvia.

During pre-screening, users will upload their passport, visa, and proof of funds, then answer questions asked by a computer-generated border guard to a webcam.  Read more...

Influencer sued for not promoting Snap's Spectacles enough

TwitterFacebook

For us mere follower-less mortals, making money as a social media influencer seems dead easy.

Like for Grown-ish actor Luka Sabbat, who was paid by Snapchat's public relations agency PR Consulting (PRC) to promote Spectacles with posts on Instagram.

But now he's being sued for allegedly not doing his job.

According to a complaint filed in the New York Supreme Court on Tuesday, Sabbat was paid $45,000 upfront in an influencer marketing deal worth $60,000 for four unique posts.

Sabbat, who has 1.4 million Instagram followers, was to deliver one Instagram feed post, and three Instagram stories of him at New York, Milan or Paris fashion weeks. One of these posts would include a provided swipe up link to Snap's Spectacles, smart sunglasses that can record short videos for Snapchat. Read more...

Lime pulls faulty e-scooters after reports of battery fires

TwitterFacebook

E-scooter company Lime is cautioning riders and contract workers about malfunctioning batteries and other issues with some of its scooters.

Lime uses Segway Ninebot scooters in many of its cities, but after an August report about battery issues in "several" units, faulty scooters are being pulled from the fleet. What Lime calls a manufacturing defect sometimes led to smoldering batteries, which would then catch fire. Lime called these "isolated instances."

Back in August, Lime worked with Segway Ninebot to digitally monitor batteries for faulty units, which would then prompt a scooter deactivation. Lime says this affected scooters in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe.  Read more...

iOS 12.1 extends controversial processor throttling feature to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X

TwitterFacebook

With iOS 12.1, Apple introduced a bunch of new features to its mobile devices like Group FaceTime and dozens of new emoji. But the company also elected to add a controversial new performance management feature to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

For the uninitiated, back in December 2017, Apple confirmed that it would sometimes slow down older iPhones through a software update in order to prevent unexpected shutdowns. The result was that models like the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus would often perform poorly after being updated to the newest version of iOS.

Users had long suspected Apple was throttling older iPhones, but it wasn't until Geekbench published an exposé that the company publicly admitted it was, indeed, slowing down older iPhones — albeit, for a good reason.   Read more...

There's still a chance for the iPad mini to become the best iPad ever

TwitterFacebook

At yesterday's iPad event, despite a late-hour rumor to the contrary, Apple didn't announce a new iPad mini.

But the company didn't kill it, either. The 3-year old iPad mini 4 even got a mention from Tim Cook, which sounds minor but it's important for a company that obsesses over details.

This means that the iPad mini is still in the game, and that there's still a chance for Apple to give it an update down the road. And a Home button-less iPad mini with Face ID, tiny bezels and updated internals could very well become the best iPad Apple has ever created.

Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin whitepaper turns 10

TwitterFacebook

On Oct. 31, 2008 an unknown person or group of people known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper called "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System."

Ten years later, we still don't know the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, but pretty much everyone knows about Bitcoin.

Bitcoin has had plenty of good days and plenty of bad days in the last decade. Its price has reached crazy heights (nearly $20,000 at its peak in Dec. 2017), and fallen into the gutter — numerous times. It's been lauded as the future of money, and it's been called a pyramid scheme and a fraud. And while it hasn't fulfilled the lofty of promises made by its evangelists yet, ten years after its inception it still endures.  Read more...

Amazon is beefing up Alexa with real-time election data

TwitterFacebook

Alexa can't vote, but Amazon's digital assistant can help you do it.

In the run-up to election day in the U.S. (Nov. 6, if you weren't sure), Amazon is giving Alexa a more civic mind by beefing up the assistant's knowledge base of election data, including where to vote, real-time results, and even explanations of ballot measures.

Now you'll be able to ask Alexa where your polling place is or who's leading in any particular race, and it'll respond with a real answer instead of just kicking you to a web search.
