How to win a global meditation contest, two years in a row

How to win a global meditation contest, two years in a row

A budding sports tournament needs a good storyline. And one character in a good sports story is an overdog — a dominant force that the rest of the sport can measure itself against, the one to beat. Think of the Green Bay Packers in the first few Super Bowls, or the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1950s NBA, or Uruguay and Italy in the early World Cups.

And now the world of competitive meditation has its overdog. A machine of a meditator who continually amazes opponents with his unflappable calm and perfect games. Not only has he won his second March Mindfulness tournament in a row, against opponents from around the world, but he has done so despite my best efforts to mess him up by changing the entire format of the contest. Apple's latest Siri voice update is a baby step towards inclusivity

Apple's latest Siri voice update is a baby step towards inclusivity

It looks like Apple is finally acknowledging that Siri's default female voice isn't a good look.

According to TechCrunch, the latest public betas for iOS and iPadOS require users to select their preferred voice for Siri.

The update is currently rolling out as part of beta 6, which is the newest version of iOS and iPadOS 14.5. After downloading and installing it, users will be be instructed to choose Siri's voice. Apple also added two new voices, but they're not exactly gender neutral — one sounds feminine and the other is more masculine.

“We’re excited to introduce two new Siri voices for English speakers and the option for Siri users to select the voice they want when they set up their device,” Apple confirmed to TechCrunch in a statement. “This is a continuation of Apple’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion, and products and services that are designed to better reflect the diversity of the world we live in.” Read more...

Tile floors have met their match in these 7 robot vacuums

Tile floors have met their match in these 7 robot vacuums

When it comes to household cleaning products and devices, most folks would agree that you’d be hard-pressed to name a more revolutionary concept than the robotic vacuum — even the dishwasher doesn’t really compare to the convenience of a device that does your floors without you ever having to lift a finger.

And it’s not just the ease of use or satisfaction of watching a robot do the work for you that makes a robotic vacuum oh-so-appealing, either. Not having to worry about stress-cleaning before guests arrive, the ability to schedule cleans while you’re away from home, and even foregoing having to empty the dustbin in certain cases are all enticing benefits of upgrading to a robot vacuum — especially if you have tile floors. The bizarre story behind those 'Amazon ambassadors' on Twitter

The bizarre story behind those 'Amazon ambassadors' on Twitter

From failed attempts at sassy clapbacks to high-tech trolling, it's been a weird week for Amazon on Twitter.

Amazon got itself in some social media trouble recently as its PR twitter account tried to refute claims of its harsh treatment of workers and shift blame for taking advantage of tax loopholes. Many on Twitter weren't having it, but there were also actual non-people who joined the fray, i.e., pretty obviously troll accounts.

You might have seen some of them around. Outwardly, at least, they're Amazon employee "ambassadors" talking about how great working for Amazon is, particularly in warehouse or delivery jobs. Except when they're not — sometimes they're fake accounts. Read more...

The best ecommerce WordPress themes for your online store

The best ecommerce WordPress themes for your online store

WordPress is among the world’s most popular website software options in use today — and there are good reasons for that. It’s free, open-source, and allows you to create your own website without needing to be fluent in programming languages (though if you are well-versed in them, you can definitely still use it). Plus, while WordPress was initially built as a blogging platform, numerous themes and plugins have helped it grow, and today it can be used to create a range of different kinds of websites, from blogs, to portfolios, to ecommerce sites.

In fact, if you’re looking to build an ecommerce store, WordPress is easily one of the best platforms to use because of how dynamic, flexible, and powerful the software is. For example, Quero Shoes and Blue Star Coffee Roasters are two ecommerce sites built with WordPress.  Read more...

Instagram copies another TikTok feature with 'Remix'

Instagram copies another TikTok feature with 'Remix'

Instagram's new Remix feature looks a lot like the one that made TikTok so popular.

The platform launched the Remix feature on Wednesday, which allows Instagram users to create their "own Reel next to one that already exists." It's very similar to TikTok's Duet function, which allows users to, well, duet an already existing video on the app. The wildly popular feature facilitated trends like the viral sea shanty harmonies that took over the internet earlier this year.

With Instagram's Remix function, which users can access by tapping on the three dot menu of the Reel they want to remix, creators can record a new video stitched to the original one. Once recorded, users can control the original video's volume, their own video's volume, and record a voiceover.  Read more...

Apple's rumored mixed-reality headset might get an in-person event this year

Apple's rumored mixed-reality headset might get an in-person event this year

Apple is purportedly wasting zero time jumping back into in-person gatherings.

According to Bloomberg, the company is planning to announce its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset within "the next several months" at an event that will presumably be open to select media and industry partners.

The news comes only a day after Apple confirmed its Worldwide Developer Conference would be held virtually this summer for the second year in a row. But while the tech giant is clearly content with unveiling its updated operating systems via livestream, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman stresses that the same approach won't fly for its headset. Facebook made it easier to see News Feed chronologically, but there's a catch

Facebook made it easier to see News Feed chronologically, but there's a catch

One of the features Facebook has always been incredibly sneaky about is the order of posts appearing in the News Feed. By default, it's algorithmic (it's called Top Stories), meaning Facebook decides the order in which you see posts. This is alright if you trust the company's machine learning algorithms, but just seeing posts in order in which they appear chronologically has a lot of benefits.

Facebook does offer an option to show the Most Recent stories in the News Feed — it's tucked away in the Shortcuts menu, possibly under See More — but the setting "eventually" returns to Top Stories. This odd behavior shows how important it is for Facebook to keep showing you stories in the order it chooses, but it's also incredibly annoying if you're set on seeing the most recent stories, as there's no permanent way to turn this feature on. (Notably, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently grilled by the U.S. Congress about the way the company's algorithms work).  Read more...

Global tree loss can't hide from these cloud-piercing radar satellites

Primary rainforest destruction increased by 12 percent between 2019-2020, an acceleration that was unexpected during a year when most of the world was forced to slow down to a near halt.

One of the most effective ways to combat deforestation and tree loss, it turns out, is surveillance – using a variety of satellite sensors that can see even a single tree removal anywhere on the globe.  Read more...

Google launches a cool new document scanner called Stack

Google launches a cool new document scanner called Stack

Google's Area 120 – an in-house incubator, where Google engineers pursue their pet projects that sometimes turn into actual products – has launched a document scanner called Stack, and it may just be one of the best such apps out there.

Like most document scanners, Stack uses your phone's camera to create a scan of a document, such as a receipt, bill, or a banking statement. However, the app also reads some of the key data from your document – such as the total amount on a bill, for example – and then organizes your scanned documents into folders.

These folders, called "Stacks," are labeled as various categories, such as receipts, bills, vehicle, house, IDs, etc. You can also mark a document as starred, which will put it into a separate Stack.  Read more...

Deepak Chopra on building a daily meditation habit: 'Make your body smile'

Deepak Chopra on building a daily meditation habit: 'Make your body smile'

March Mindfulness is Mashable's series that examines the intersection of meditation practice and technology. Because even in the time of coronavirus, March doesn't have to be madness.

When I first started meditating last year, I was on a roll. I managed to squeeze in a session every day for months, even if it was only a minute long. But my search for serenity was fueled by the anxiety of an ongoing pandemic. One year on, I've grown much more comfortable in quarantine — and my daily meditation habit fell apart.

To build it back up, I decided to consult an expert on mindfulness. And who better than health guru Deepak Chopra? If anyone could steer me back on course, I figured, it's the author of more than 90 books and the founder of the nonprofit Chopra Foundation. The prolific doctor also just launched two meditation apps: Chopra Meditation & Well-Bein‪g (for self-care tips) in 2020, and Digital Deepak (an AI twin that you can interact with) in 2021. Volkswagen wants you to believe its name change isn't an April Fools' joke

What's in a name? Volkswagen, if the infamous car company is to be believed, is hoping to find out.

The maker of the new ID.4 EV let slip, apparently by mistake, Monday that it intended to rebrand its U.S. operations as "Voltswagen of America" in a nod to its goal of producing 1.5 million electric vehicles a year by 2025.

Despite the proximity to April Fools' Day and plenty of skepticism online, the car company claimed the change is real in a Tuesday press release

"We might be changing out our K for a T, but what we aren't changing is this brand's commitment to making best-in-class vehicles for drivers and people everywhere," said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Voltswagen of America. Read more...

Apple will finally fix the iOS issue that blocked searches for 'Asian' as adult content

Do you have adult content blocked on your iPhone or iPad?

If so, it's likely that your iOS device is currently blocking web searches using the word "Asian." It's been an issue for more than a year — but it's about to be fixed.

Mashable has confirmed that in the latest iOS 14.5 Beta, the adult content filter no longer blocks web searches containing the word "Asian."

The iOS 14.5 Beta was released for developers just last week. Apple will launch the public release for all users sometime in the Spring.

The issue became very apparent In the wake of the mass shooting at three Atlanta spas two weeks ago which left eight people dead, six of whom were Asian, "Stop Asian Hate" trended online. Google slips in Suez Canal Easter egg after ship freed

Google slips in Suez Canal Easter egg after ship freed

The Suez Canal is finally free. It was blocked for six days by the Ever Given, resulting in trade losses of billions of dollars — and a lot of memes.

The disruption was so great that the traffic jam could be seen from space. While an investigation is already underway about what exactly went wrong, Google wasted no time keeping the Suez Canal meme going.

Google slipped in a Suez Canal Easter egg for all of us to enjoy. Just search "Suez Canal" or "Ever Given" and behold:

As confirmed by 9to5Google, the Easter egg appears to only be on Google desktop, not mobile. The site will likely not keep these ships chugging along forever, so watch them sail by while you can. Read more...

Who wants to work at a messy desk? Nobody. And yet so many of us do.

Studies have shown that a cluttered desk distracts you from work, decreases your productivity, and undermines your persistence in completing tasks. But it’s hard to keep your space organized when what seems like hundreds of cables and chargers are cluttering your space.

If that cable clutter is the straw that breaks the camel’s back, snag this three-in-one desktop charging stand from Aduro and bring back some order to your workspace. The stand features three different grips for securing your devices — one for your smartwatch, one for your wireless earbuds, and one for your phone. Anti-scratch rubber cushions help prevent your devices from slipping out or getting scuffed. Read more...

Apple announces WWDC date and yes, it's virtual again

On Tuesday, Apple officially confirmed that its Worldwide Developer Conference for 2021 will be held on June 7. Given that the pandemic is still ongoing, the event will be held virtually for the second year in a row.

Apple is often tight-lipped on hardware events, but not with WWDC. The conference is dedicated to unveiling the latest versions of its operating systems: iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

However, there's always room for Tim Cook to throw in "one more thing." Last year, the company announced it was trading Intel processors for its own silicon. In prior years, Apple has also used WWDC to reveal products like a new Mac Pro and updated MacBooks. Read more...

PayPal to start allowing users to pay with cryptocurrencies

PayPal to start allowing users to pay with cryptocurrencies

PayPal is embracing cryptocurrencies as a means of payment.

According to a report by Reuters, PayPal will announce on Tuesday that it has started allowing customers in the U.S. to use crypto for payments.

The launch has been confirmed to Reuters by PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman.

“This is the first time you can seamlessly use cryptocurrencies in the same way as a credit card or a debit card inside your PayPal wallet,” Schulman told Reuters.

More precisely, users will be able to pay using bitcoin, ether, bitcoin cash, and litecoin. The service will be available at all of PayPal's 29 million merchants "in the coming months." When making a purchase at a merchant that uses PayPal, users will be able to convert their crypto holdings into fiat currency at checkout — though it's unclear whether this will be automated or not. There will be no transaction fee at checkout, and users will only be able to use one type of coin per purchase.  Read more...
