Microsoft leak hints that a rumored dual-screen Surface is pocket-sized

TwitterFacebook

Just don't call it a Windows Phone.

Rumors of a dual-screen Surface have been kicking around for a little bit, but here's a surprising new detail: It's built for your pocket. That's what it sounds like, anyway. The revelation comes from an internal document obtained by The Verge, though Microsoft hasn't confirmed it.

"It’s a new pocketable Surface device form factor that brings together innovative new hardware and software experiences to create a truly personal and versatile computing experience," the document — which is merely quoted, rather than reprinted in its entirety — reads. Read more...

Europe's 'biggest ever' LSD bust nets more than $5 million in seized cryptocurrency

TwitterFacebook

Not cool.

A combined task force of the Spanish Guardia Civil, the Austrian Federal Police, and Europol yesterday announced what they're calling "Europe's biggest ever LSD bust" and oh man in unrelated news I totally need to rethink my July 4 plans to just sit back and stare at fireworks for hours while contemplating life.

According to the press release, the bust went down in the Spanish cities of Granada and Valencia, and resulted in the seizure of approximately €4.5 million (around $5.25 million) worth of bitcoin, lumens, and IOTA. Read more...

Fourth of July sales from Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and more

TwitterFacebook

The Fourth of July is around the corner and you know what that means: Colossal sales on all of the usually expensive things like TVs, laptops, and mattresses.

Oh yeah, and I guess fireworks and cookouts and whatever also happen.

But we're most excited about upgrading every room in the house and saving a ton of money while doing it. Now that sets off fireworks in my heart.

Find mattress sales at stores like Macy's and Mattress Firm (this one from Beautyrest is almost $2,000 off), save up to $900 on smart 4K TVs from Samsung and VIZIO or up to $300 on laptops from Apple or Dell, plus massive store-wide sales from Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. Read more...

This electric taxi service only accepts payment in song

An electric vehicle is the perfect space for a car singalong

Belting out a Journey classic from the passenger seat goes hand-in-hand with an electric vehicle, mostly because the cars are super quiet, thanks to those emission-free battery-powered motors. Everyone can hear and appreciate your lyrical skills. Or your passion that makes up for those skills.

To show off how otherwise silent their rides are, clean energy company Fortum, which runs a charging network in the Nordic area with more than 2,000 electric car charger stations, is offering free trips in an electric shuttle — the BMW i3 — at the Finnish music festival Ruisrock next weekend.  Read more...

IPVanish review: This is what an overpriced VPN looks like

TwitterFacebook
IPVanish VPN
$6.49 a month (2-year plan)
The Good
Industry-standard security • Fast download speed (EU and UK) • Easy to use • Supports torrenting
The Bad
Slow-to-average download speed (Asia • U.S.) • No Netflix
The Bottom Line
IPVanish isn't terrible, but it's not great either, and it has a long-term price higher than most VPNs. There are VPNs that offer better service for half the price.

Apple Maps is getting a complete redesign

TwitterFacebook

Apple Maps is finally getting the redesign it needs.

In a deep dive with TechCrunch, Apple detailed the lengths it's gone to over the past few years to rebuild its maps app, which will make its (limited) public debut next week.

According to the report, the new app will be available to iOS 12 beta users in the San Francisco Bay Area next week and will expand to all of Northern California later this year. It's not clear how long the full global rollout might take.

So what's going to be different with the new Apple Maps? The short answer is just about everything. Because Apple has spent the last couple years gathering and parsing its own maps data — it's no longer relying on data from third-party partners — the company now has much more detailed physical information about the world.  Read more...

Thousands of Android and iOS apps are leaking sensitive data, says report

TwitterFacebook

Millions of passwords, GPS locations, and financial records are sitting unprotected in plain sight — and yours could be one of them.

Researchers at Appthority, a mobile security firm, scanned both Android and iOS mobile apps that used Firebase databases to store their users’ data. For the uninitiated, Firebase is a popular cloud-based backend platform for mobile and web applications. The company was acquired by Google back in 2014, so it’s found a real user base among some of the top Android developers.

Inside Microsoft's secret Surface testing labs

TwitterFacebook

I cringed hard as a robot arm dropped a Surface Pro onto the ground from several feet up

I did it again when a hose sprayed water all over another Surface tablet. And then again when another robot repeatedly stabbed a Surface Studio's screen with a Surface Pen over and over.

I'm not watching a YouTube video of some crazy kid torturing their Microsoft devices just for the views.

These are real stress tests performed at Microsoft's reliability labs at its Redmond, Washington campus to ensure its products are built to last and can survive even the most unexpected real-world scenarios.

Major Apple parts supplier Foxconn breaks ground for factory in Wisconsin

TwitterFacebook

Foxconn, a major Apple parts supplier, broke ground in Wisconsin yesterday for its first plant in the United States.

The project located at Mount Pleasant in southeast Wisconsin is estimated to cost $10 billion and is projected to create thousands of jobs. It's the largest economic development project in Wisconsin's history, and when it is done, will manufacture LCD screen panels.

It's uncertain whether Apple will use these screens, however, since it mainly sources them from Samsung, LG, and Japan Display. Its recent screens, additionally, have departed from traditional LCD panels — the electronics giant followed the lead of its chief competitor Samsung by incorporating OLED screens into its latest designs. Apple has reinvented what it means to be a Twitter lurker.

The company's Twitter profile makes it look like the tech giant does absolutely nothing on the platform: Apple has never tweeted, not one single time, and it follows zero accounts.

But thanks to Twitter's new ad transparency tool, we can now see that Apple is actually prolific around the globe — in promoted tweets advertising its products.

On Friday, the fan blog 9to5Mac took advantage of Twitter's ads transparency tool to find just what messages Apple wants to get out there. Primarily, Apple really wants the people of Twitter to get #BehindTheMac. You can see all of Apple's promoted tweets hereRead more...

Planagram is an app to help marketers get the most out of Instagram

TwitterFacebook

Nobody wants to admit it, but most Instagram users know the optimal time to post a photo and get the biggest ego boost. It's also known as Insta Prime Time, and it's that period of the day when one can acquire the highest engagement rate (AKA heaps of likes and comments.) Most people take advantage of that time frame, and honestly, there's no shame in that game. After all, if you worked so hard to snap the perfect selfie, wouldn't you want it to get noticed by as many people as possible?

There are some who would even go as far as to set alarms to get notified of Insta Prime Time, so they could hit post once the clock strikes Insta o'clock. Again, you do you. But if you're running an Instagram account for a brand, this is serious business, and a Planagram Agency Plan can do it all better than you can on your own. Read more...
