SAVE 49%: A 15-month subscription to ExpressVPN is on sale for £4.95 per month as of May 1, saving you 49% on list price.

Do you want to watch more content from around the world, without relying on some dodgy stream that sends a load of dangerous adverts your way? VPNs offer a safe solution to your streaming woes.

VPNs hide your real IP address and connect you to a server in another location. This simple process lets you bypass geo-restrictions to watch extra shows and movies that are normally only available in that country. You'll still need a subscription to a streaming site, but a VPN significantly boosts your content library. Read more...

All the best robot vacuums for your hardwood floors

All the best robot vacuums for your hardwood floors

Robot vacuums have revolutionised the way we clean the house. We no longer have to be home in order to clean because robot vacuums run on schedules that you can set for while you're at work, running to the shop, or even on holiday.

If you don't have carpet, you might not be as inclined to invest in a robot vacuum cleaner, but these little machines are actually beasts when it comes to hardwood flooring.

Do robot vacuums really work?

Robot vacuums are usually not as efficient as upright vacuum cleaners. Their suction isn't as powerful and you just can't get the same kind of clean that you get from eyeballing your floors and going back over spots you can tell you missed. Of course, some robot vacuums do have features that allow them to detect problem areas with extra dirt and debris buildup where the vacuum will put in extra attention, but that's not necessarily the standard across all price points.  Read more...

Basecamp tire fire grows as employees tweet they're leaving the company

Basecamp tire fire grows as employees tweet they're leaving the company

As they have many times before, tech workers are once again taking a stand against controversial company policies and wishy-washy managerial strategies. This time, employees of decades-old software company Basecamp are quitting in protest of what one employee called a "tantrum" by management.

After a week of controversy that exposed racially insensitive actions that had carried on for years, and what staffers perceived as management's discomfort with addressing them, multiple employees announced on Twitter that they were leaving Basecamp for good.

As a result of the recent changes at Basecamp, today is my last day at the company. I joined over 15 years ago as a junior programmer and I’ve been involved with nearly every product launch there since 2006.

Creators are making bank selling....Google spreadsheets

Creators are making bank selling....Google spreadsheets

Would you ever buy a spreadsheet?

Clearly, a lot of people would...because they already have. Online creators are making some real money selling digital products created on spreadsheet services such as Google Sheets and Airtable.

Take Andrew Kamphey, who is a self-described "maker." Kamphey told Mashable that he's made more than $40,000 in the past year from his spreadsheet products, such as "100 Twitter Templates in a Google Sheet." His main moneymaker is Better Sheets, which teaches users how to better utilize Google Sheets (so they too can sell their spreadsheets).

Another maker, Janel Loi, went with Notion, a workspace tool that allows users to create databases and wikis, to build her product, Newsletter OS. It includes templates, spreadsheets, and more that can help creators manage their newsletters. In a conversation with Mashable, Loi says she has made more than $35,000 from it since it launched in October 2020. Read more...

People have sworn by microcurrent facials since the '70s, though treatments offered in salons are significantly more powerful than those offered by the growing number of at-home devices. Like NuFace's popular microcurrent facial gadgets, Foreo recommends the Bear for people who have anti-aging concerns, or want to sculpt and tighten their face, improve wrinkles, and get rid of fine lines — all common skincare concerns. EU accuses Apple of anti-competitive behavior, with billions on the line

EU accuses Apple of anti-competitive behavior, with billions on the line

Apple's App Store rules are unfair, the European Commission has concluded following a year-long investigation.

The EU launched a formal investigation into Apple's App Store rules last June, following a complaint by Spotify in 2019, which claimed that Apple's App Store rules make it impossible for the company to stay competitive.

Now, Europe's preliminary conclusion is that Apple is in breach of Europe's competition law.

"Our preliminary conclusion is that Apple abused its dominant position for the distribution of music streaming apps through its App Store and distorted competition in the music streaming market," the EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager said in a statement Friday.  Read more...

Small businesses had a brutal pandemic. Amazon's earnings more than tripled.

The pandemic hit the bodies, hearts, and pocketbooks of most Americans hard. But Amazon did just fine.

Amazon released its earnings report on Thursday for the first quarter of 2021. It gives us a clear picture of how Amazon fared during the pandemic.

So how are Amazon's coffers looking? They are, frankly, overflowing. In January through March in 2021, it reported net income of $8.1 billion. That brings its total pandemic earnings to $26.9 billion. As MarketWatch points out, that's three times as much money as Amazon made in the previous three years combined.

It also tripled its earnings from the first quarter of 2020, when it reported net income of $2.5 billion Read more...

You'll be able to turn off your sound or video in Instagram Live Rooms

Instagram Live Rooms is getting a small but notable update.

During Live broadcasts, hosts will be able to mute their audio like you would in a Zoom or Google Meet call, and they'll also be able to turn off video for chats, bringing a vibe notably similar to the popular audio-based app Clubhouse.

Instagram launched Live Rooms in March, allowing users to chat with three people at once in a Live session, rather than just with one.

"By giving people the option to mute their audio or turn off their video, hosts will have added flexibility for their livestream experience, as the added functionality could help decrease pressure to look or sound a certain way while broadcasting live," Instagram said in a statement emailed to Mashable. Live, the company added, gives creators a "quick, low-lift way to connect with their community and audience and have a real back-and-forth conversation." Read more...

Snap still isn't very diverse, but its engineers are trying to build a more equitable product

Snap engineers are working to root out racial bias from the company's products, even as improving diverse representation in the company's workforce is slow going.

Snap, Inc. released its second annual diversity report Thursday, containing mixed results. The company has made modest gains in hiring underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, increasing by .5 percentage points to 13.6 percent at the leadership level.

There was notable improvement in hiring Black employees, particularly Black women, (with hiring in the latter group growing from 2 percent to 5 percent of new hires) and elevating women to tech leadership roles. On the other end of the spectrum, retention of Hispanic employees dipped slightly, as did representation of Asian people in leadership roles, to 14.3 percent (which is disproportionately low compared to representation of Asian people across the company as a whole at 34.3 percent). Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold definitely folds, but that's about it

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold definitely folds, but that's about it

A couple of years ago, for reasons that have never been quite clear to me, the tech world seized on the idea that foldable screens are the future. This movement has, so far, yielded things like the botched Samsung Galaxy Fold, its improved (but wildly expensive) successor, and a Motorola Razr revival that made disgusting noises when you tried to bend the screen.

In other words, foldable devices have done little to advance the notion that they're the future of technology. Lenovo's recently released ThinkPad X1 Fold may be notable for being the first foldable Windows PC, but it still doesn't buck that trend. Read more...

Billionaire commissions bespoke Rolls-Royce that can be color-coordinated with his private jet

Yusaku Maezawa is an eccentric Japanese billionaire, who founded the giant online fashion mall, Zozotown and was the first to buy a SpaceX tourist ticket for a trip around the Moon.

Maezawa recently commissioned a bespoke Phantom Oribe, a one-time collab between Rolls-Royce and Hermès, to complement his private jet. Because nothing screams global inequality like a color-coordinated private jet and Rolls-Royce. Read more...

Apple's iPads and Macs might be in short supply this year

Apple's iPads and Macs might be in short supply this year

If you're looking to buy a new iPad, a MacBook Pro, or perhaps one of the rumored, upcoming Macs with an M2 chip, you might have to wait in line for a while.

During Apple's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, CEO Tim Cook said (via MacRumors) that Macs and iPads might be in short supply during the second half of the year.

"(The) shortages primarily affect ‌iPad‌ and Mac. We expect to be supply gated, not demand gated," said Cook, answering a question on chip shortages. Cook didn't detail which products, specifically, will be affected, but he says Apple will do its best figure it all out.  Read more...

This handy app helps you connect your AirPods to your Mac

TL;DR: The AirBuddy app is on sale for £6.48 as of April 29, saving you 10% on list price.

Linking a pair of AirPods to a Mac requires a few more steps than linking them to an iPhone or iPad. While clicking a few more times is not necessarily a pressing issue, if it really bothers you, the AirBuddy app can make things easier.

On the app, you'll be able to see the current status and battery life of your Apple AirPods via your Mac, the same way you can on an iPhone or iPad. You'll also have the option to quickly change listening modes, microphone input, and output volume with a simple keyboard shortcut — you won't have to open System Preferences or the Bluetooth menu. Uber will now deliver a rental car to your door — and pick it up when you're done

Uber will now deliver a rental car to your door — and pick it up when you're done

Ride-hailing app Uber launched a new feature on Wednesday in an effort to make renting a car less painful.

While you’ve been able to rent a car through Uber for a while, the company announced on Wednesday that you can now book a rental car from Avis, Budget, Hertz and dozens of other companies directly from your app — and have the vehicle delivered to your home and picked up when you’re done through the new Valet feature.

"No rental car counters, no lines, no schlepping," the company said on Wednesday, adding that it's "bringing the magic of Uber to the rental car experience."

Uber Rent with Valet will be launching in Washington, D.C., in May with plans to expand nationwide this year. Read more...
