What to expect at WWDC 2018: Apple needs to step up its AI game

Of all the events that happen in tech during the course of the year, Apple’s fall event, where the new iPhone is typically revealed, usually gets the most attention. But the keynote of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference is arguably more important, since, as a software showcase, it reveals more of what Apple is thinking about broader technology trends.

Facebook finally kills its terrible Trending news section

In a surprising Friday news dump, Facebook announced it will remove the Trending news section from its website and app.
The company says its users are increasingly consuming news through mobile and video, and it will begin to focus its attention on those two categories. The Trending section will be removed for all users by next week.
In a statement, the company said:
Facebook says it's exploring new ways to help people stay informed about up-to-the-minute news events including things like working with 80 publishers to add a new breaking news label to posts on in the News Feed. Read more...

We'll probably get a cheaper iPhone this year—but not as soon as we thought

Rumors spread earlier this year that a new, cheaper iPhone would be coming this fall. But a new report says we might have to wait a little longer than expected for it.
The device's LCD screen is supposedly to blame. Manufacturers are encountering problems with light leaking through the screens, according to a report from The Bell, a South Korean newspaper cited by Nashville Chatter. That will reportedly cause a release date delay, pushing the drop date back from September to November.
You should definitely take these delay rumors with a grain of salt. The analyst is unnamed, and we're unable to read the South Korean paper the report originated from. Read more...

There's a common misconception that Macs don't need antivirus software. Unfortunately, that's far from accurate these days.
Macs are generally more secure than PCs, thanks to a more secure operating system where certain aspects of its software are more locked down and harder to infiltrate by rogue software. Also, fewer people own Macs meaning fewer targets for criminals. However, that doesn't mean that it's impossible to get a virus on your Mac, or receive a suspicious piece of malware either.
A report from Malwarebytes found that Mac malware has seen an increase of over 270% between 2016 and 2017. That number is likely to rise in 2018 with new threats like OSX.MaMi and Dark Caracal cited in the article as significant ways of disrupting Mac owners. Amazon Alexa will begin suggesting skills for random requests

Amazon's Alexa voice assistant has so many skills, it can be hard to know exactly how to activate them sometimes. But the company is building a new way for people to discover skills without having to request them specifically by name.
Amazon announced today that it's launching a new beta feature called the CanFulfillIntentRequest interface that developers can use to make their Alexa skills more easily discoverable.
The tool uses machine learning to find skills that can help fulfill a person's request when they don't know exactly what you're looking for. For example, if they ask, "Alexa, where are the best surfing spots today near Santa Barbara," the voice assistant will scour all the various surfing skills on the platform to determine whether they can understand and help process the request.
