Microsoft's Cortana is saying goodbye to Android and iOS in 2021

Microsoft's Cortana is saying goodbye to Android and iOS in 2021

It's looking like curtains for Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant. On mobile, at least.

In an announcement posted on July 31, the company said it would pull the Cortana mobile app from both iOS and Android devices in early 2021. While this is new for American users, Microsoft did a similar scrubbing of mobile Cortana in regions like Canada, Australia, and the U.K back in Jan. 2020.

As Mashable tech reporter Alex Perry explained back then, this means that, "your reminders and lists won't work through [mobile Cortana] anymore. They'll still be synced to the Microsoft To Do app, as a minor consolation prize. It's also being integrated into Microsoft 365 apps." Read more...

Netflix rolls out new playback speed settings, starting with Android

Netflix rolls out new playback speed settings, starting with Android

You want to watch a 30-minute episode on Netflix but you only have 20 minutes to spare. What can do you?

The answer to that question used to be "nothing," but a new feature on Netflix now lets Android users bend time to their will. The addition of playback speed settings allows viewers to watch their content at both slower (0.5x and 0.75x) and faster (1.25x and 1.5x) speeds.

The feature is hitting Android first – I don't have it yet, but watch for an app update soon if you haven't gotten it – and Netflix intends to test it for eventual release on iOS and the web as well. The feature's release comes after a testing process that started back in Oct. 2019. Read more...

Apple may be setting up to compete with Square's contactless payments

Apple may be setting up to compete with Square's contactless payments

Is Apple preparing to take on the mobile payment company, Square, Inc.? A recent purchase suggests as much.

Apple has reportedly acquired Mobeewave, a Montreal-based tech startup that empowers tap-based payments. It works like this: a vendor with the app installed can turn their near-field communication-equipped (NFC) smartphone or tablet into a contactless payment terminal.

So unlike Square, which depends on a card reader for payments, Mobeewave's technology can accept payments from NFC-equipped cards and smartphones with a tap. Apple's iPhones, notably, have come packing NFC tech since 2014. Read more...

Best audio workout apps for training without a screen

Best audio workout apps for training without a screen

Since your gym is still closed and will be for a while, the world is now your workout space. But for those venturing outside or training in the living room, staring at a screen is the last thing you want after a day of, well, staring at a screen.

That's why we recommend audio fitness apps. Ethan Agarwal, CEO and founder of audio workout app Aaptiv (full disclosure: I'm an active user on a 259-day streak) wrote in an email that "Zoom fatigue" is real, and that "working out without looking at a screen is such a relief."

During the pandemic, fitness junkies are going to have to get creative when it comes to weight training, yoga, and other forms of exercise. So grab your headphones and take a listen. Read more...
