Samsung is making chips for cryptocurrency mining

Samsung's chip-making division is diving into the lucrative space of cryptocurrency mining.

Korean news outlet The Bell broke the news Tuesday, and Samsung confirmed to TechCrunch Wednesday that it's indeed making crypto-mining chips. 

“Samsung’s foundry business is currently engaged in the manufacturing of cryptocurrency mining chips," the company told TC without disclosing any further details.  Read more...

Apple tells U.S. government it isn't slowing old iPhones to get people to buy new ones

Apple has confirmed the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating the company after it was discovered Apple slowed down (a.k.a "throttled") older iPhones.

The tech giant, however, has denied any malicious intent, and reiterated that "we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades."

Will Spotify and Apple Music soon be forced to jack up their prices?

It's widely known that musicians get paid fractions of a penny for their streamed songs on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and other streaming services. 

In fact, UC Irvine media studies professor Peter Krapp told Mashable it would take about 4 million Spotify streams for a songwriter to make minimum wage in California over the course of a month. 

But this past weekend, the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board ruled that songwriters must be paid more for their songs. 

Now, streaming companies must pay 15 percent to music publishers, the largest portion in history (and a 43 percent increase).

Is Facebook's Messenger Kids app good for children? One group says no.

Getting children addicted to social media is now' Facebook's latest bad lewk.

In an open letter to Mark Zuckerberg, a coalition of children's health and education organizations and individuals have called on Facebook to shut down Messenger Kids on behalf of the wellbeing of children. 

Messenger Kids is the parent-monitored chat, photo, and video messaging service Facebook launched in December 2017 for children as young as six years old. The minimum age for regular Facebook users is 13.

Published by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and signed by a host of other organizations, the letter argues that introducing children to social media at an earlier age will increase their dependence on digital devices, negatively affect their mental health, and impact their ability to form relationships.
