Ariana Grande's 'thank you, next' just broke YouTube

TwitterFacebook

Ariana Grande has another accomplishment to add to her ever-growing list: breaking YouTube

The pop singer dropped the much anticipated music video for her hit song "thank you, next" on Nov. 30, and in the process managed to overload the online video platform. Well, her devoted and passionate fanbase did, anyway.

That's right, according to YouTube, the service was unable to handle the barrage of comments on the video after it went live — prompting someone at YouTube to compare "thank you, next" to another famous internet moment

Deputy AG Rosenstein calls on Big Tech to protect users

Deputy AG Rosenstein calls on Big Tech to protect usersDeputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says tech companies need to keep consumers safe, while also providing a way for police to break through their systems’ encryptions. Technology companies need to stop putting profits and growth over the safety and security of their customers. “Technology is advancing at a speed and volume that exceeds the capacity of most people to comprehend the accompanying risks, let alone to protect against them,” Rosenstein said in his speech.

If you think you’re seeing swastikas in Google Maps, don’t panic

TwitterFacebook

Some Google Maps users are making a confusing and troubling discovery when opening the app.

In some cases, users reported that they're seeing the swastika symbol on some locations, in particular hotels, when opening up Google Maps, according to tweets.

Twitter user @irishkokolily asked the Google Maps Twitter account, “can you tell me why the hotels in Dublin on my Google maps has swastika signs for them?” A screenshot attached to the tweet shows two Dublin hotels, The Merchant House and Kelly’s Hotel, marked with a pin displaying the symbol in question, which resembles a swastika. Huawei's next phone will kill the notch with a 'hole punch' selfie camera

TwitterFacebook

Essential birthed the notch with the PH-1 and Apple popularized it with the iPhone X, but Asia's biggest smartphone makers already look ready to kill it and replace it with a less offensive-looking hole cutout in the upper corner.

Samsung teased this "Infinity-O" or "hole punch" camera screen at its developer conference a few weeks ago — the Galaxy S10 might be its first with the display — but China's Huawei might beat it to market first.

Huawei's expected to announce the Nova 4 with a front that's nearly all display on Dec. 3, according to The Verge. Read more...

Solving AI's 'black box' problem: Learning how algorithms make decisions

TwitterFacebook

In 2017, a Palestinian construction worker in the West Bank settlement of Beiter Illit, Jerusalem, posted a picture of himself on Facebook in which he was leaning against a bulldozer. Shortly after, Israeli police arrested him on suspicions that he was planning an attack, because the caption of his post read "attack them."

Except that it didn't. The real caption of the post was "good morning" in Arabic. But for some unknown reason, Facebook's artificial intelligence-powered translation service translated the text to "hurt them" in English or "attack them" in Hebrew. The Israeli Defense Force uses Facebook's automated translation to monitor the accounts of Palestinian users for possible threats. In this case, they trusted Facebook's AI enough not to have the post checked by an Arabic-speaking officer before making the arrest. Read more...

Marriott data breach affected 500 million customers over four years

TwitterFacebook

If you value your data privacy, Starwood Points might end up costing you more than they've saved.

Marriott International, Incdisclosed a data breach of its Starwood guest reservation database on Friday. It estimates that the hack has affected 500 million customers, and acknowledged that the compromise had gone undetected for four years; hackers have had access to components of the database since 2014, and Marriott only became aware of any security issue in September 2018.

Yep, that means somebody had four years of unfettered access to a massive database of world travelers and their personal and potentially financial information. It's one of the biggest breaches in history, behind Yahoo's 2013 email hack, which affected 3 billion users. Read more...

Apple Watch Series 4 will receive an extended 45-day return period

TwitterFacebook

Apple has a strict 14-day return policy on most of its products. But that may change for its newest wearable, the Apple Watch Series 4.

MacRumors reports that the new Apple Watch will be getting an extended 45-day return policy thanks to the heart-tracking features in the smartwatch.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is set to receive an electrocardiography (ECG) companion app in the coming works. It should be arriving alongside the watchOS 5.1.2 update for all Series 4 models.

The leaked document obtained by MacRumors doesn't provide much insight into the reason behind the extended return period. It does explain, though, that returning the Watch past the two-week period will require a customer to do it through Apple Support. Read more...
