Twitter's 'Quote Tweet' changes make sussing out online drama easier

Twitter's incredibly handy "Retweets with comments" feature is getting a rebranding, as well as becoming a tiny bit more convenient to use. Earlier this year, Twitter added the option to see retweets that include a comment without having to use an automated account such as @QuotedReplies. Now the feature has been renamed, ditching the descriptive but clunky "Retweets with comments" for the cleaner "Quote Tweets."  Quote Tweets also appear between the Retweets and Likes on a tweet now, making the feature slightly less annoying to access. Previously, you had to click to see the Retweets,...

TikTok's new commerce integration lets creators start milkin' content for cash

TikTok is making it easier for creators to turn looped video streams into pure American profit.  The embattled social media company announced Monday that it had entered into a new partnership with the customized online merch platform Teespring. The integration will allow creators to include links to their Teespring products directly in their videos. TikTokkers with hearty followings already frequently link to personal merchandise stores in their bios. Selling merch like clothing, as well as digital tutorials or templates, is a popular way for independent creators to earn cash from the people...

Amazon gets official approval to fly its delivery drones

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an ... Amazon drone? Amazon has just gotten the thumbs up from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to start using its Prime Air drone fleet for customer deliveries. On Saturday, the FAA granted Amazon Part 135 Certification, which means the company has the go-ahead to use drones to "safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers," according to a statement from the FAA. That doesn't mean drones are going to start delivering packages immediately, per Amazon. Instead, it indicates that the FAA has reviewed all of Amazon's safety procedures, and the company...

Google starts displaying licensing details for image results

Google is making it a lot easier to find images you can legally use for your projects. The tech giant will now mark image results with a badge that says “Licensable” if their publishers or creators have provided their licensing information. You’ll get a link to those licensing details — say, if they’re under Creative Commons and can be used for free with attribution or if they have a commercial license — when you select an image to view. https://ift.tt/32HUdWk from Yahoo Tech https://ift.tt/34O9A21 via IFTT...

Motorola One 5G brings quadruple rear cameras and 5G support for less than $500

Folks who are curious about this whole "5G" thing but don't want to take out a loan to get in on it got some good news from Motorola Monday. The Illinois-based tech giant just announced that the Motorola One 5G will launch in the United States later this year for less than $500.  Motorola didn't share an exact price, but promised it would launch below that threshold. The device will be available on AT&T "soon", the company says, and on Verizon in early October. It's the newest in a nascent, but noteworthy, market for mid-range 5G smartphones, alongside the $600 Samsung Galaxy A71 5G...

Algorithms control your online life. Here's how to reduce their influence.

Mashable's series Algorithms explores the mysterious lines of code that increasingly control our lives — and our futures. The world in 2020 has been given plenty of reasons to be wary of algorithms. Depending on the result of the U.S. presidential election, it may give us one more. Either way, it's high time we questioned the impact of these high-tech data-driven calculations, which increasingly determine who or what we see (and what we don't) online.  The impact of algorithms is starting to scale up to a dizzying degree, and literally billions of people are feeling the ripple effects....

Of course, outsourcing the design process to get eye-catching assets can be extremely expensive and time-consuming. That's where a subscription to Flat Icons can really come in...

Amazon adds 1,800 electric delivery vans — this time from Mercedes

It's not 100,000 electric delivery vans from new car company Rivian, but Amazon is adding nearly 2,000 new Mercedes vans to its fleet. Instead of diesel or gas-powered vans, however, every vehicle making Amazon deliveries from the German carmaker will be fully electric. Amazon recently announced a partnership with Mercedes-Benz to incorporate 1,800 new delivery vans into its delivery service across Europe by the end of 2020. Those vans include 1,200 eSprinter vans and 600 eVito vans.  The electric Sprinter van is the newest commercial electric vehicle from Mercedes and is a bigger version...

What is an algorithm, anyway?

Mashable’s series Algorithms explores the mysterious lines of code that increasingly control our lives — and our futures. “The Algorithm” is impenetrable. It’s mysterious, it’s all-knowing, it’s omnipotent. Except that it’s not.  An algorithm is a simple concept that, today, has many complex manifestations. Algorithms’ central and opaque position at the heart of social networks like Facebook cause some to view algorithms in general with a sort of mystical reverence. Algorithms have become synonymous with something highly technical and difficult to understand, that is either an arbiter...

And now Triller is trying to buy U.S. TikTok, report claims

If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. That appears to the thinking of Triller, a U.S.-based "social streaming" app, which according to Bloomberg teamed up with an asset management firm in an attempt to buy TikTok for $20 billion. Or, more specifically, to buy parts of TikTok for $20 billion.  Those parts include TikTok's U.S., Australian, New Zealand, and Indian components — locations where the ByteDance-owned company ran into various legal troubles, faced security concerns, and risks possible shuttering. India went so far as to ban TikTok outright in June for "[engaging] in activities which...

Mark Zuckerberg blames Facebook contractors for Kenosha militia fiasco

When it comes to mistakenly allowing a militia's event page to remain on Facebook, even after concerned users reported it at least 455 times, Mark Zuckerberg wants you to know that the buck stops with his contractors.  In a Friday video announcement, the Facebook CEO attempted to explain away his company's failure to remove the Kenosha Guard's event page as an "operational mistake" made by third-party reviewers working on behalf of Facebook. Notably, The Verge reports that the event page issued a "call to arms" — not in response to Wisconsin police shooting Jacob Blake seven times in the...

It looks like OnePlus might be getting ready to finally launch a smartwatch

It's safe to say OnePlus has been busy launching products like its flagship OnePlus 8 Pro, the budget-friendly OnePlus Nord, and OnePlus Buds over the past few months. But it looks like it's not done yet. The company is also apparently adding a new smartwatch to the list. First spotted by 91 Mobiles, the company received IMDA certification for a device called a OnePlus Watch, complete with a model number W301GB. Unfortunately, none of the specifications are listed but it's described as a "wearable watch." Of course, it's also unclear whether this detail implies the device will launch in 2020...

Slack fixes 'critical' vulnerability that left desktop app users open to attack

Slack and its scores of desktop app users just dodged a major bullet.  The communications tool relied upon by journalists, tech workers, and D&D fans alike disclosed on Friday a "critical" vulnerability — now fixed — that would have let hackers run wild on users' computers. Slack's internal security team didn't even find the bug; rather, it was a third-party security researched who reported it, through the bug bounty platform HackerOne in January. Notably, the exploit allowed for something known as "remote code execution," which is just as bad as it sounds. Before Slack fixed it, an...

Modder makes a portable Wii out of the body of a GameBoy Color

Ever wonder what it would look like if the Nintendo Wii and GameBoy Color had a baby? Well, now you don't have to.  A modder known as GingerOfMods made a portable Wii console by packing it into a build similar to that of a GameBoy Color. The entire breakdown can be seen in a YouTube video posted to their channel. In the video, the modder makes it clear this is an actual working console. "Despite its small size, it's a fully fleshed out device with a full feature set, rather than just a novelty," GingerofMods said.  Throughout the video, you can see a breakdown of how this device...

But they can only do so much, especially when it comes to the trackpad. For many units — including premium laptops — trackpads are mediocre at best. They're either overly-sensitive or lack tactility, not to mention damaging to the wrists and fingers in the long run. In other words, we can do better. Do yourself a favor and invest in a wireless mouse like the Apple Magic...

Elon Musk parades about Neuralink-wired pig, and this is apparently the future

Well that had to be the oddest job-recruitment pitch ever streamed to YouTube.  Late Friday afternoon, Elon Musk took the stage to update the world on Neuralink — his effort to link the human brain to computers — and to implore engineers, animal care professionals, and robotics experts to join him. At the heart of the demo was a pig by the name of Gertrude, which he claimed has been linked up to some form of Neuralink for the past two months.  Repeatedly emphasizing that the goal of the presentation was recruitment, Musk described the Neuralink device as "a Fitbit in your skull, with...

Elon Musk demonstrates Neuralink's tech live using pigs with surgically-implanted brain monitoring devices

Elon Musk -founded Neuralink has made headlines over the past many years around it efforts to develop a new kind of interface between the human brain and computing devices. On Friday, the company provided a demo of the technology, and Musk kicked off the demo by saying that the purpose of the entire presentation was recruiting – not fundraising or any other kind of promotion. Musk then went on to say that the reason he wants to make it generally available is that just about everyone will have some kind of neurological problem over time, including memory loss, anxiety, brain damage, depression...
