Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo could be unveiled as early as June

TwitterFacebook

The only thing Apple fans love more than new product rumors is actual new products.

Well hold on to your butts, 'cause it looks like we're getting both.

The Cupertino-based company has reportedly started manufacturing its Siri-powered speaker aimed at dethroning the likes of the Amazon Echo and Google Home. But wait, there's more: Apple is moving quickly and may unveil the new device as soon as the June WWDC

Word of the possible reveal comes to us via Bloomberg, which hedges that news with the caveat that even if Apple fans attending WWDC are lucky enough to get a glimpse of the next shiny Apple device to fall from the Pegatron tree, the product won't likely ship until the fall.  Read more...

Cadillac tech 'talks' to traffic lights so you don’t run them

TwitterFacebook

Cadillac's cars are getting even chattier.

Now they can "talk" to traffic lights to let drivers know when the light is going to turn red, a feature meant to cut down on dangerous last-minute decisions. Cadillac announced this week that it successfully tested the technology, called vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication.

The V2I test comes after the luxury automaker rolled out a feature to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication back in March, which made its 2017 CTS sedan the first car on the market with the ability to "talk" to other enabled vehicles in its vicinity by sending data about road conditions back and forth through a connected system.  Read more...

6 innovations that help artists control their environment

TwitterFacebook

Art and technology have a lot in common.

Both have a way of pushing boundaries, of helping us look at the world in new ways, and of generating the Next Big Thing.

Artists and creators alike – whether that means sculptors, animators, museum curators, illustrators, and everyone in between – are constantly looking to new technologies as a way to keep pushing beyond what’s been done before. But this level of innovation requires precise control, whether that’s through the environment or at artist’s tools.

Here are seven innovations that help artists manage their environment – and the creative process – in entirely new ways.    Read more...

Samsung's Bixby is delayed (again) because English is too hard

TwitterFacebook

Galaxy S8 owners are in for a bit longer of a wait before they'll be able to use one of the smartphone's most important features.

Samsung's highly anticipated digital assistant is delayed — again — according to a new report in The Wall Street Journal.  The reason for the delay: English is just too complicated.

The voice-enabled assistant, which has been available in Korea since the smartphone shipped, is "struggling to comprehend English syntax and grammar," according to the report.

"Bixby Voice benefits from time to further enhance natural language understanding, and we are currently growing our user testing in the U.S. to prepare for launch," a Samsung representative said in a statement, noting that other Bixby features, like Bixby Vision, which uses the S8's camera, are already live. Hillary Clinton just called out the 'conspiracy, lies, false information' of Twitter and Facebook

TwitterFacebook

Hillary Clinton is not happy with Twitter. Or Facebook.

Responding to a question from Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal at the Code Conference regarding whether Twitter has been "bad or good for our national discourse," the former presidential candidate expounded upon the ways that Twitter has negatively impacted our politics.

"I think it has certainly provided, as you say, positive information, quick turnaround information to a very large audience," observed Clinton. "But I think it has become victimized by deliberate efforts to shape the conversation and push it toward conspiracies, lies, false information." Read more...

Hillary Clinton says Facebook must 'prevent fake news from creating a new reality'

TwitterFacebook

Hillary Clinton is not happy about fake news on Facebook.

Speaking at Recode's Code conference Wednesday, the former secretary of state had some strong words about the role fake news on Facebook played in the election, saying the social network must do more to combat it.

"They've got to get back to trying to curate it more effectively, they've got to help prevent fake news from creating a new reality," she said.

"If you look at Facebook, the vast majority of the 'news items' posted were fake," she said. "They were connected to, as we now know, the 1,000 Russian agents who were involved in delivering those messages, they were connected to the bots that are just out of control." Read more...

Russia's Google rival just jumped into the self-driving car race

TwitterFacebook

Self-driving car testing is one of the most exciting developments in the automotive world, as autonomous vehicles take to the streets in California, Michigan, Arizona, and as soon as next year, Russia.

Russian search giant and Google competitor Yandex announced on Tuesday that it's working to develop its own on-demand transportation service, Yandex.Taxi.

“At this point in time, there are dozens of companies around the world building their own driverless cars, but only a few of them have components crucial for turning this project into reality," said the project's leader, Dmitry Polishchuk, in the announcement. "These components include a stack of reliable technologies and algorithms, engineering expertise and resources, and access to the market for self-driving vehicles. Yandex.Taxi, with the backing of Yandex, is one of the few players who can boast of possessing all of the above.” Read more...

What the Essential Phone means for the iPhone 8 and all future phones

TwitterFacebook

YOUApple deserves all the credit in the world for transforming smartphones from ugly chunks of plastic with physical QWERTY keyboards into sleek metal and glass touchscreen devices.

In recent years, however, the company's ability to innovate with iPhone has been questioned. Despite some big internal upgrades like water-resistance and dual cameras — on top of the controversial removal of the headphone jack — the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus bear the burden of looking old with a design that hasn't changed much since the iPhone 6.

And though leaks for the iPhone 8 are aplenty, it's still somewhat difficult to pin down what will and won't make it come announcement time this fall. Read more...

Don't count on Netflix as net neutrality's savior

TwitterFacebook

The streaming times, they are a-changin'.

Netflix, which fought hard and loudly for net neutrality when it was in the spotlight five years ago, has been relatively muted this time around. While the company's position hasn't changed — it still believes the principles behind net neutrality are fundamentally correct — Netflix isn't nearly as outspoken now that the FCC is throwing out the rules that helped protect it back in the day.

On stage at the 2017 Code Conference at a ritzy Rancho Palos Verdes resort just outside of Los Angeles, CEO Reed Hastings explained that the reason isn't just a bad case of buffering. Basically, it boils down to changing priorities now that the company has grown to 190 countries worldwide and is now known as much for its original content as its streaming service. Read more...

Amazon Alexa finally supports iCloud calendars

TwitterFacebook

If you use Amazon's trusty AI, Alexa, for all your scheduling needs, we have some good news for you.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that Alexa-compatible devices now finally support Apple's iCloud calendars. While Alexa has previously synced with other major calendar services — including Google Calendar, G Suite, Outlook, and Office 365 — the AI assistant has been notably lacking integration with iCloud calendars ... until now.

With the update, iCloud calendar users can review and adjust current calendar events and issue commands to add new appointments to their schedules.

That means whether you have a doctor's visit or a brunch with the squad, your BFF Alexa will not only remind you, but now she'll do one step farther and sync to your appointment to iCloud calendars. Read more...

Your intense iPhone thirst could stop Nintendo from being able to make the Switch

TwitterFacebook

Bad news, gamers: our collective thirst for new smartphones could throw off your chances of being able to get your hands on the hottest console on the market for the rest of the year.

The Nintendo Switch has been a hot commodity since it dropped back in March — it's the fastest-selling console in the company's extensive history and likely the number two console on the market right now. That runaway popularity has made it difficult for Nintendo to keep up with consumer demand. But there's another factor in play that could the Switch away from store shelves and out of consumer hands — your smartphone obsession. Read more...

I replaced my smartphone with a Nokia 3310, and I never want to go back

TwitterFacebook

For the last week or so, my Android smartphone was benched—I put it into a drawer, and for the next week, barely touched it. Instead, I used the new Nokia 3310, a reboot of Nokia's 17 year-old phone of the same name, which was once legendary for its longevity and near-indestructibility.

I thought I'd suffer the week at the hands of a dumbphone—that I'd miss my emails, my apps, all of it. The week came and went. Not only was it not that bad, but I'm tempted to never go back to my Android phone. In fact, I'm tempted not to go back to any sort of smarpthone, ever again.
