Revolut launches new, effortless way to donate to charities

TwitterFacebook

Revolut is a UK-based financial services company that offers clients a bank account and a pre-paid card, with many of its services free or incurring a lower fee than you'd get from a typical bank. It's now also offering a new feature that makes it really easy to donate to charities — every time you make a payment.

The feature, called Donations, lets you round up your Revolut card payments and donate the spare change to a charity of your choice. The service is kicking off with three charities: ILGA-Europe, Save the Children and WWF

Android might finally get a better AirDrop alternative

TwitterFacebook

Google might finally deliver a viable version of AirDrop for Android phones.

The company is testing a new Android feature called "Fast Share" that would allow phone owners to wirelessly transmit photos, text, and other files to nearby devices using Bluetooth. The currently unreleased feature was uncovered by two separate publications, 9to5Google and XDA Developers.

According to screenshots posted by the publications, Fast Share allows you to share photos, text, and URLs with devices that are nearby even if you don't have an internet connection. Interestingly, the list of devices in the screenshots includes an iPhone as well as a Chromebook and Pixel 3 phone, suggesting the intention is for Fast Share to enable cross-platform sharing. Facebook's Libra hasn't launched, but big banks are already taking notice

TwitterFacebook

Facebook has only just revealed its far-reaching cryptocurrency plans, but Libra is already prompting global financial institutions to take action.

Central banks are reportedly becoming more interested in the idea of creating their own digital currencies following Facebook's Libra reveal, as evidenced by new comments from the head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS),

As the bank used by central bankers. BIS is, in the words of Quartz, among the "the stodgiest of stodgy institutions." But BIS bank head Agustín Carstens now says central banks have to take digital currency much more seriously as a result of Facebook's move. Read more...

Google's texting app could soon be more like Snapchat

TwitterFacebook

Google's iMessage competitor may soon be getting an upgrade.

The company is testing Snapchat-like augmented reality effects in its Android Messages texting app, according to a new report.

The folks at XDA Developers uncovered five unreleased AR effects in the messages app, and they're actually pretty cool. You can see them all in the video below, but they include a fireworks effects, an angel (complete with a halo, of course), confetti, balloons, and a clever airplane animation.

At this point, it's not clear if this is anything more than a test or when these might be more widely available. Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the feature.  Read more...

Driving an electric car feels like a game — and that's a good thing

TwitterFacebook

The rolling hills of Northern California appeared before me; the river where gold was first discovered in the 1800s rushed past. But all I wanted to do was gawk at the electronic dashboard behind the wheel.

I was in an all-electric Chevrolet Bolt, driving from the state capital of Sacramento to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, deeper into gold country. After putting the car into Chevy's battery-saving "low mode" at the start of my trip, I hadn't touched the brakes, even when slowing down or at a stop sign or traffic light. Simply letting up on the accelerator dragged me to enough of a stop. I was regenerating energy in the battery, and it was thrilling and addictive.  Read more...

Trump changes his mind, says Huawei can buy some U.S. tech after all

TwitterFacebook

Well that didn't take long.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Chinese manufacturer Huawei will be able to once again purchase goods from U.S. technology companies. This is a sharp reversal from his stance in May 2019, when Reuters reported that the U.S. Commerce Department said the company would first need U.S. approval to purchase goods from American manufacturers.

According to The Washington Post, Trump made the announcement following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"We had a very, very good meeting with China, I would say probably even better than expected," the Post quotes Trump as saying.  Read more...

The innate pleasures of the YouTube music rabbit hole

TwitterFacebook

This is Ode To..., a weekly column where we share the stuff we're really into in hopes that you'll be really into it, too.

Echoing with the sounds of nature, the calls of birds and soft keys,  “A I R (Air In Resort)” suddenly popped up while I was listening to music on YouTube, something I tend to just leave on like the radio while working these days.

The album, which I'm now obsessed with, was produced by Japanese ambient musician Hiroshi Yoshimura. Designed to complement a fragrance for cosmetics company Shiseido back in 1984, the record was merely a gift with the perfume.

For that reason, “A I R (Air In Resort)” isn’t available on streaming services, and I’m puzzled to think where I would think to find it — if it didn’t just appear out of nowhere on YouTube. Read more...

Second U.S. city passes ban on facial recognition tech

TwitterFacebook

A second U.S. city is banning its municipal government from ever using facial recognition technologies over fears it'll pave the way for mass surveillance.

On Thursday, the city council of Somerville, Massachusetts voted 11-0 to pass the anti-facial recognition ordinance, which calls out the technology for its potential to "chill" protected free speech.

"The broad application of face surveillance in public spaces is the functional equivalent of requiring every person to carry and display a personal photo identification card at all times," reads the ordinance.

The ordinance also points to how facial recognition technologies can misidentify people, particularly women and non-whites. The ordinance adds that "many of the databases to which face surveillance technology is applied are plagued by racial and other biases, which generate copycat biases in face surveillance data." A Garmin GPS can help you avoid traffic, and this one's on sale for up to $50 off

TwitterFacebook

TL;DR: Walmart has Garmin's Drive 52, DriveSmart 55, and DriveSmart 65 GPS devices on sale for $30 to $50 off their suggested retail prices.

Fourth of July weekend traffic can be the stuff of nightmares, which makes it all the more important to have a premium GPS as your copilot — one that won't just guide you through congestion, but help you steer clear of it entirely so you can make it to the barbecue before all the Jell-O jigglers are gone.

The highly-rated models in Garmin's 2019 Drive Series are a smart pick for two reasons: One, they feature the company's Traffic service that suggests alternative routes to avoid gridlocks and slowdowns. And two, they're on sale at Walmart right now for up to $50 off: Read more...

Apple's last major device made in U.S. will now be made in China

TwitterFacebook

Apple's new Mac Pro is notable for a number of reasons. The $6,000 beast famously resembles a cheese grater and probably will never be used by most people. It might also be the end of Apple manufacturing products in the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Apple would move production of the new Mac Pro to China. Back in 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a big to-do about building the Mac Pro in the U.S.

According to the Journal's sources, contractor Quanta Computer Inc. will handle manufacturing near Shanghai. While consumers are unlikely to tell the difference, it could land Apple in trouble with the Trump administration. Read more...

Best 4K TV deals for the weekend of June 28

Guys, July is in a few days. Don't mind us, just having an internal panic.

There is one upside, though: All of the best streaming releases come out mid-summer. We never thought we'd get to say this, but Stranger Things 3 is just a few days away — followed by the final season of Orange is the New Black on July 26.

If you're going to be using every waking moment to binge-watch the new releases, you might at well do it on a 4K TV. (How else are you going to see the dark scenes in Stranger Things?) There are some seriously good deals sprinkled across Amazon, Dell, and Walmart this weekend, including $600 off a 65-inch Samsung QLED TV and $1,000 off an 82-inch Sony Bravia TV. Read more...

But consider for a moment the possible consequences of not having a secure connection in a professional context. Not only would you be putting your company's data at risk of being hacked, but that of your clients and customers would be vulnerable to pesky cybercriminals, too.  Read more...
