Amazon's Ring worked with more cops than ever before in 2020

Amazon's Ring worked with more cops than ever before in 2020

While the rest of us spent 2020 trying to reckon with the atrocities of police brutality and racism embedded into the American justice system, Amazon's Ring spent it doubling down on its effort to cozy up to more cops.

More than 1,189 local police and fire departments joined Ring's Neighbors Portal program in 2020 alone, according to a report from Amazon found by the Financial Times, giving a grand total of 2,014 government agencies access to one of the biggest private surveillance networks in the country.

The number of departments added last year was more than double the 703 brought on board in 2019, and an even bigger increase from the 40 back in 2018. The participating agencies now span across almost the whole of the United States, with the exclusion of only Wyoming and Montana. Read more...

WhatsApp is using Status stories to make users feel better about their privacy

WhatsApp is using Status stories to make users feel better about their privacy

WhatsApp is apparently using Status messages — the app's take on Stories — to set users' minds at ease.

Users of the Facebook-owned messaging app in the U.S. and UK received reassuring Status notes about WhatsApp's approach to privacy on Saturday, according to a report from The Verge. One of Mashable's sister sites in Asia also spotted similar messages earlier in the week.

The other Mashable (hi all!) noted that WhatsApp's first three Status stories all focused on the company's new privacy policy, which goes into effect on May 15. They're simple, friendly messages that favor big ideas over piles of detail. Read more...

The internet tricked me into believing I can multitask

The internet tricked me into believing I can multitask

When we spend so much of our time online, we’re bound to learn something while clicking and scrolling. Discover something new with Mashable’s series I learned it on the internet.

I've never felt more like a hungry squirrel than when I spoke to a neuroscientist who's spent decades studying, and trying to expand, human attention spans.

Just like a squirrel forages for nuts, he explained, humans forage for information. As a squirrel hops from tree to tree to gather food — even if the tree it's hanging out in has plenty to offer — humans hop from information source to information source. We get bored of our metaphorical nuts, or we get anxious that the other tree's nuts are better, and bouncing over there is a breeze.  Read more...

This Chrome extension auto-saves live transcripts of your meetings

TL;DR: Keep transcripts of your video calls with a subscription to CaptionSaver Pro. As of Jan. 31 get a lifetime subscription for $24.99, a 49% savings.

After spending almost an entire year working from home, we’re all starting to get a little burnt out. It was once enjoyable to dress up only the top halves of our bodies and pretend to wear real pants as we chatted eagerly with our coworkers over Zoom. Now it’s tough to even focus on what each meeting is about — especially if you're trying to take notes at the same time.

Unprecedented times call for new apps and inventions, though, and CaptionSaver Pro is one of our favorites. A Chrome extension for all the remote workers out there, CaptionSaver creates live caption transcripts from Google Meet video calls and presentations and automatically saves them to your Drive. So, not only can you follow along easier during your live meetings, but you’ll also be able to go back and reread the transcripts later on for a refresher. Read more...

Facebook's next product frontier is reportedly newsletters

Facebook's next product frontier is reportedly newsletters

Facebook is gearing up to snatch a piece of the newsletter pie.

The social media company is reportedly developing a set of newsletter tools "for journalists and writers," according to a story from the New York Times. It's early days for the project, according to the three people who spoke with the paper, but it apparently has CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's blessing.

The move would mark Facebook's latest step into territory that's already been popularized by other businesses. Substack is perhaps the best-known example to most in these early days of 2021, though Twitter's recent acquisition of Revue is also a notable development in the same space. Read more...

How to set a sleep timer in iOS for Netflix, Hulu, or any other streaming app

How to set a sleep timer in iOS for Netflix, Hulu, or any other streaming app

There's some buzz right now about Netflix testing out a sleep timer.

It's a great idea for the app, which is no doubt up and running on many bedside stands around the world as subscribers settle in for a night's rest. But it's just a test for now, and one that's only for Android versions of the app. That doesn't mean iOS users are out of luck, though.

While having sleep timers bundled as in-app features has been great for other apps (I use the Pocket Casts one frequently), iOS users already have access to a simple-yet-powerful sleep timer that works across all of the media apps I've tested so far. It's very easy to find and even easier to set up. Read more...

Robinhood now says you can buy one GameStop share, as a treat

Corporate benevolence has never looked so sweet.

After first preventing its users from purchasing GameStop stock on Thursday, the free-trading app Robinhood reversed course. On Friday, in its ultimate wisdom and generosity, Robinhood decided to limit the number of GameStop stocks its users could purchase to one. That's right, one single stock.

So noted the company in a blog post, which was quick to emphasize that "these are aggregate limits for each security and not per-order limits, and include shares and options contracts that you already hold."

And while, at the time of this writing, Robinhood's own website says it's limited AMC share purchases to 10, the app apparently isn't being as generous — slapping a one-share limit on that stock as well.  Read more...

Notably, these are the stocks that have gotten in the crosshairs of Reddit investor group r/wallstreetbets, who are buying them en masse and betting against massive hedge funds that have been relentlessly shorting (selling in anticipation of buying cheaper later) these stocks in recent months and years (read the whole saga here).  Read more...

Here's how to file an SEC complaint against, let's say, a stock-trading app

Here's how to file an SEC complaint against, let's say, a stock-trading app

It's surprisingly easy to file an investor complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that you had a legitimate, well-founded complaint against a stock-trading app. Maybe, and this is just a hypothetical, the app — seemingly to protect its own interest against that of its users — locked you out of certain trades.

That'd be a bummer, right? In addition to any potential financial loses you might experience, there's a real chance you could end up feeling angry, frustrated, sad, despondent, or all of the above. And while sure, the immediate damage is already done, that doesn't mean you're powerless.  Read more...

Facebook and Apple's PR war seriously heats up

Facebook and Apple's PR war seriously heats up

Facebook and Apple's public brawl over privacy concerns and monopoly power just got even more intense.

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke at the European Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference on Thursday. He seemed to deliver harsh words for Facebook without actually naming Facebook, a true mean girl power move.

"The fact is that an interconnected ecosystem of companies and data brokers, of purveyors of fake news and peddlers of division, of trackers and hucksters just looking to make a quick buck, is more present in our lives than it has ever been," Cook said. "And it has never been so clear how it degrades our fundamental right to privacy first, and our social fabric by consequence." Read more...

Here's how to transfer stocks out of your Robinhood account

Here's how to transfer stocks out of your Robinhood account

Taking from the poor and giving to the rich was never supposed to be Robinhood's thing.

Users of the free stock-trading app Robinhood were up in arms Thursday after the company blocked the purchase of several stocks associated with a short squeeze led by the subreddit r/wallstreetbets. Thankfully, just because their money is tied up in the Robinhood app doesn't mean it has to remain that way.

The company, which once boldly proclaimed "let the people trade," provides detailed instructions on how to transfer stocks out of Robinhood.

Let the people trade.

Where to pre-order Ring's new $60 video doorbell, its smallest (and cheapest) yet

Amazon's home security and smart home brand Ring is one of the biggest names in the video doorbell game, and starting next month, its convenience and protection will be more affordable than ever before: The company announced this week that it's coming out with a new video doorbell that'll retail for only $59.99, which is a whole $40 less than its standard Video DoorbellRead more...

Robinhood no longer allows users to buy GameStop, AMC, BlackBerry shares

Users can't buy GameStop shares, or shares of AMC, BlackBerry, or Nokia, on Robinhood anymore.

The company said Thursday it has restricted transactions for certain securities "amid significant market volatility."

Numerous Robinhood users have confirmed this on Twitter. When they tried to open one of the stocks, they got a message that said, "You can close out your position in this stock, but you cannot purchase additional shares."

The complete list of shares that currently cannot be bought through Robinhood is as follows: $AMC, $BB, $BBBY, $EXPR, $GME, $KOSS, $NAKD and $NOK.

Robinhood says it has also raised margin requirements for certain securities.  Read more...
