Mark Zuckerberg decries reported end of DACA in heartfelt Facebook post

TwitterFacebook

President Donald Trump's decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is nearing a critical crossroads, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants his stance — along with most of Silicon Valley's — on the Obama administration policy to be clear.

In a Facebook post published Thursday night, Zuckerberg pledged his support of DACA, called "Dreamers" the future of the country, and urged other business leaders to join in signing an open letter addressed to Trump. The letter has already been signed by fellow tech giants Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook, along with numerous others. Read more...

Facebook is working on a way to fix your janky 360-degree photos

TwitterFacebook

Facebook wants you to post more 360-degree photos. Earlier this week, the company announced it would allow people to capture the spherical shots and set them as their cover photo right from the app.

Problem is, 360-degree photos are a lot trickier to capture than a regular photo. Because it can difficult to keep the camera straight while you capture the image, the photos often look crooked, which, well, doesn't look great on Facebook.

That's why the social network's researchers are working on a way to use Facebook's AI tech to automatically fix 360-degree photos. It's still in a research phase for now, but, judging by some of their early results the method looks pretty promising. Read more...

Samsung will test its mysterious self-driving cars in the U.S.

TwitterFacebook

Samsung's self-driving car project is now eligible to hit the road in the US.

The California DMV just gave the South Korean tech company permission to test autonomous vehicles on the state's public streets, signaling a new expansion of Samsung's self-driving program.

The agency keeps a running tally of all the companies with permission to test self-driving tech on its website, which has become a veritable who's who of the autonomous development space. Most major automakers are on the list, along with tech companies that are working on their own systems like Waymo, Apple, and Nvidia.

Facebook rolls out new shows to the entire U.S.

TwitterFacebook

That was quick.

Just a couple weeks after first introducing its new platform for TV shows, Facebook is now bringing the feature to everyone in the U.S.

Called Watch, the social network is now working with dozens of publishers on original programming that lives in a dedicated section of Facebook's app and website.

Facebook began testing Watch earlier this month, but the feature was only available to a handful of users in the U.S. Whatever the company was hoping to gauge in the first few weeks apparently went well, though, because they're now pushing it live for the entire country. (Facebook tells us the full rollout will take a few days, so if you're not seeing it quite yet, keep checking.) Read more...

Smartwatches leave fitness trackers in the dust in the growing wearable market

TwitterFacebook

Smartwatches finally reign supreme in the wearable world.

The gadget segment saw a major increase in shipments over the last few months, according IDC's latest wearables market report. Smartwatch shipments grew 60.9 percent in Q2 2017, a massive spike in consumer interest in a category that many were ready to give up on as recently as this April.

The smartwatch surge might have come to the detriment of the once-mighty "basic wearables" category, which covers gadgets that don't run apps like step counters. The simple fitness trackers posted a loss for the first time ever, with a negative annual growth of -0.9 percent.  Read more...

Everything you need to know about the Steve Jobs Theater

TwitterFacebook

The biggest tech event of the year is about to go down at Apple Park's Steve Jobs Theater, and while numerous stories have predicted what might be revealed, what do we actually know about the setting itself?

Just enough to tantalize, it turns out.

Named for the late CEO and company co-founder Steve Jobs, the theater is set to have its formal unveiling to the public on September 12 — the same day as the presumed iPhone 8 unveiling. And although the phone will certainly be the star of the show, the setting shouldn't be overlooked.

I held 400GB on the tip of my finger and felt like god

TwitterFacebook

An ungodly number of tech gadgets — monster PCs with 18-core processors, a gazillion VR headsets, and more — will be announced at IFA in Berlin this week. But none will match the sheer awesomeness of SanDisk's 400GB microSD card. None. Period.

Yes, it's a memory card. And yes, storage isn't sexy. But dammit, it's a fingernail-sized memory card with 400 friggin' gigabytes of storage. That's three times the amount of storage that comes with an entry-level MacBook Pro. If you're head isn't exploding thinking about how much stuff you can store in something this small, it should be.

WikiLeaks mocked after apparent address takeover

TwitterFacebook

Looks like OurMine commandeered WikiLeaks's web address on Thursday.

Though WikiLeaks appears back to normal, typing "wikileaks.org" into your browser earlier on Thursday sent you to a black page with "OURMINE" written in huge red and white lettering.

"Remember when you challenged us to hack you?" the text asks WikiLeaks. "#WikileaksHack let's get it trending on twitter!"

OurMine appears to have responded to a hacking challenge by coopting some Domain Name Servers, redirecting WikiLeaks traffic to the page of their choice. WikiLeaks has taken pains to say that their servers weren't compromised, which would be a more significant security concern for them. Read more...

The Moto X is back, and it's packing two intelligent cameras

TwitterFacebook

The Moto X is back — but it's no longer the colorful and customizable Android smartphone it once was.

After skipping last year, Motorola is dragging the Moto X series out of hiatus and refreshing it with the new Moto X4 at the IFA tech show in Berlin.

The Moto X used to be Motorola's top-of-the-line smartphone — its most premium hardware married with the Moto Maker, an online portal that let you personalize your phone by choosing colors, materials, and even customized boot-up screens.

But that's all in the past now because the Moto X4 looks just like every another Android phone with a metal glass sandwich design that tries to remind you  that it's not made by Samsung. Read more...
