Top Google searches show this nation's citizens had a v. v. odd 2016

In 2016, even Australia was unsure why it was competing in the Eurovision song contest. The country is, after all, a long way from Europe.

"Why is Australia in Eurovision?" was the sixth most popular "why is...?" search in Australia in 2016, according to Google's data.

It was preceded by choice questions such as "Why is my internet so slow?" not to mention the perennial faves, "Why is the sky blue?" and "Why is my poop green?"

While overall searches were pretty predictable — everyone was concerned with the U.S. election, the Olympics and the Census — things got weirder in the more existential sections. Read more...
