Eric Schmidt steps down as chairman of Google's Alphabet

One of the longest-running Google executives is stepping away from the tech giant. 

Eric Schmidt, who joined Google in 2001 as CEO and served as executive chairman of Google's parent company Alphabet, is stepping aside from his current role. He will serve as a technical advisor, the company announced on Thursday. 

CNBC was first to report the news. 

“Larry, Sergey, Sundar and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition. The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving. In recent years, I’ve been spending a lot of my time on science and technology issues, and philanthropy, and I plan to expand that work," Schmidt said in a statement. Read more...
