Lithium-ion batteries power most of the portable devices we carry with us every day. The vast majority are designed safely, but occasionally there can be a problem that makes the batteries overheat. If that happens, there's a chance the battery can catch fire.
The potential volatility of lithium-ion batteries received unprecedented attention this past fall because of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fiasco (a design flaw in the battery appears to have been the issue).
